Notes on Baumeister & Leary, thirty years later

Thirty years ago, Baumeister and Leary published their seminal paper on the need to belong. Rereading it today reveals how ahead of its time their formulation was.

They argued that the need is characterized by regular social contact and a stable framework of ongoing concern. Our recent work in distributed networks merely extends this: the contact does not need to be co-present, but the ongoing concern must be reciprocal.
